Network Systems and Operations Support Engineer

Hill Associates is seeking an experienced Network Systems and Operations Support Engineer to support a large Washington, DC area Federal agency with their IP-based data, internet access, and remote access VPN solutions. This is a hybrid position that requires some on-site work in Washington, D.C., near the Metrorail Red Line, with minimal travel expected outside the local area.
As a full-time employee, you will be a journeyman engineer at a small, award-winning technology firm with demonstrated success delivering and supporting mission-critical networking solutions. This opportunity involves enterprise-wide work in support of the Department's OCIO.
The successful applicant will provide local area network (LAN) engineering and operations services supporting a very large internet gateway service and the Network LAN ecosystem. The position involves working as a member of the network infrastructure and services operations team. Applicants can expect to utilize their skills to support the deployment, migration, and performance management of enterprise applications, network technologies, and services, providing hands-on network device configurations, performance optimization, network security, and operations support.
Key Responsibilities:
Network Engineering
- Provide on-demand technical and engineering support regarding the design, connectivity, and configuration of network infrastructure, unified communication infrastructure, and operations
- Direct and support the implementation of new applications and services, and associated firewall policy and routing configurations.
Network Operations Monitoring, Management, and Troubleshooting
- Develop network monitoring and management procedures using tools that complement/supplement those in use by the network service provider and Government agency customers.
- Provide problem identification, escalation, and resolution of network performance, hardware, software application, and security issues in cooperation with the senior network operations and engineering team, and Government agency customers.
- Identify routing and network access control requirements & resolution of related issues.
- Assist customers in developing and troubleshooting network routing, switching, and firewall access control policies.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university or college in a relevant field (additional experience may be substituted for degree requirements).
- At least 8 - 10 years of relevant experience.
- Requires device management and configuration expertise, and previous experience and demonstrated solution deployment and application/network troubleshooting skills over Cisco routing and switching fabrics.
- Demonstrated experience in an IP-based enterprise network environment as a network engineer, architect, analyst, and/or technical specialist.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience and proficiency with Cisco technology - routers, switches, firewalls, and remote access VPN.
- Solid understanding of internet gateway services, network operating systems, routing and transport protocols, and unified communications.
- Proven WAN/LAN systems engineering, configuration, analysis, implementation, and troubleshooting skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Palo Alto firewall and F5 load-balancer experience is a plus.
- Prior work in a Government IT environment and advanced certifications (e.g., CCNP, CISSP, or other network or telecommunications vendors/technologies)
Hill Associates is committed to pay transparency and equitable compensation. The annual salary range for this position is $120,000 - $140,000 based on factors such as job-related skills, experience, education, and location. In addition to base pay, employees may be eligible for performance-based bonuses and a comprehensive benefits package.
